They can detect and avoid the most common pesticides, so be aware that using an over-the-counter chemical can make an odorous house ant infestation worse. This species can be difficult to establish control unless you find the colonies or sub-colonies and treat them directly or indirectly with a strategic application of pesticides by a licensed professional. Odorous ants can build their nesting sites indoors and outdoors. They nest indoors – inside homes, in walls, beneath carpeting, cracks and crevices, and other suitable voids or spaces conducive to their needs. Nests can also be established outdoors under items on the ground, within landscape mulch, beneath loose bark on trees, under ground cover, in potted plants, and within piles of items such as lumber, firewood, or bricks. Regular inspections and preventative service are typically recommended to find and treat new colonies, as they can move in from neighboring properties that may have an infestation.
